Decreasing State Funding
Although UW-Madison and the other universities in the UW System are
public, support from the state has been steadily shrinking in recent
years. Only about 20% of UW-Madison's operational budget is currently
provided by the state, and over the past 6 years the UW System has lost
more than $400 million.
As state support shrinks, universities react by raising tuition,
cutting research support and keeping faculty and staff salaries low.
This results in decreased accessibility for prospective students,
stifled research efforts and loss of faculty to universities in other
states which offer more competitive compensation packages.
Every dollar invested by the state in UW-Madison returns roughly ten
dollars to Wisconsin's economy. As state support for higher education
drops, Wisconsin's citizens are the ultimate losers.
