History
The Coalition for Affordable Public Education was formed in the Fall of
2006 to advocate for responsible, long-term budgeting by the University
of Wisconsin-Madison. From the beginning, CAPE has been comprised of a
diverse membership, including faculty, graduates, and undergraduates. A
number of invested organizations have also taken part in CAPE,
including the Public Representation Organization of the Faculty Senate
(PROFS), the Teaching Assistants' Association, United Council, the
Student Labor Action Coalition, and the American Federation of
Teachers-Wisconsin.
Although CAPE initially convened around the issue of a new $8000
graduate assistant fee imposed on departments, the broader goals of
CAPE have been ensuring the stability and quality of the University of
Wisconsin for the whole University and Wisconsin communities.
